Alltype Engineering was appointed by SmartWays Alliance (SWA) to supply and fabricate 14 overhead gantries for Main Roads Western Australia’s Smart Freeway - Kwinana Northbound Project.

Designs for the cantilever gantries required large bore pipe up to 1050NB for the main posts and arms.

To cater for the conversion of the existing emergency lane to a trafficable lane, some of the gantry arms had to be up to 26m long, making them the largest seen in Western Australia. Many of the gantries also had to be designed to accommodate digital message screens, as well as Lane Use System (LUS) screens built into the balustrade frames to provide lane-by-lane electronic signage.

The gantries were manufactured to AS5131 CC3 and the fabrication process governed full traceability for materials and welding, increased levels for welding qualification and surface preparation. With the application of MRWA’s specifications for materials certification and additional testing, this resulted in the highest quality applicable for these type of structures.

Alltype Engineering’s processing capability was the key to achieving an accurate dimensional outcome. Using equipment capable of cutting and bevelling the shaped VMS arm penetrations and pre-drilled structural and plates, we provided a quality finished product within dimensional tolerance.

The efforts of our workshop personnel and surface treatment sub-contractors to deliver these gantries within a tight timeframe to meet critical freeway shutdown dates for installation must be applauded.

We were excited to be part of the team to construct Perth’s first Smart Freeway and look forward to it being fully operational.
